COUNTY The county variable tells the person's county of residence at diagnosis. If the county of residence was not known, it is reported as "Unknown." Only Oklahoma residents are included in the datasets. Queries may be conducted on all counties or selected counties.

METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS (MSAs) The MSA variable tells the person's MSA of residence at diagnosis. MSA refers to geographical region with a high population density at its core and high degree of economic ties throughout the area.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services use these geographic designations for their programs. They are county based using Census Bureau metropolitan and micropolitan definitions.

Case: A condition, such as chlamydia infection (i.e., an chlamydia case) or AIDS (i.e., an AIDS case), diagnosed according to a standard case definition.

Chlamydia Infection: Caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis, is the most commonly reported, notifiable sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States and the most prevalent, reportable STI in Oklahoma.

Gonorrhea Infection: Caused by Neisseria gonorrhea, a bacterium that can grow and multiply in warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, mouth, throat, eyes, and anus.

Primary and Secondary Syphilis: A genital, ulcerative sexually trans-mitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.

Mode of Transmission: No information is collected on the mode of transmission for cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Race: A sociological designation, identifying a class sharing some outward physical characteristics and some commonalities of culture and history. In this document, race is categorized as White—Non Hispanic, Black—Non Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native—Non Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander—Non Hispanic, Multiple Races (Two or More Races)—Non Hispanic, Unknown—Non Hispanic, or Hispanic—All Races. All persons with Hispanic ethnicity, regardless of race, are categorized as Hispanic (e.g., If a person is reported as Black and Hispanic, they are analyzed as Hispanic).
