952.0-952.9Spinal Cord Injury without Evidence of Spinal Bone Injury

*Spinal cord injury cases must meet the case definition of an acute traumatic lesion of the spinal cord resulting in any degree of sensory or motor deficit; the deficit may be temporary or permanent. Injuries to nerve roots or spinal plexus are not included. A fracture of the vertebral spine may or may not be present.

AGE
Ages are combined into specific age ranges. Queries may be conducted on one or more age ranges. If all ages are selected, unknown ages are included.

SEX
Queries may be conducted on males only, females only, or both sexes combined. The sex was reported as unknown for a few cases in which skeletal remains were found.

RACE
Race options include White, Black, American Indian, Asian, and Other/Unknown. Queries may be conducted on all races combined or on a specific race. Persons of Hispanic origin may be of any race. Ethnicity is not recorded in a standardized manner in medical records (e.g., the "race" may be listed as Hispanic).

COUNTY (Map of Oklahoma Counties) External Link
The county variable tells the person's county of residence. If the county of residence was not known, it is reported as "Unknown." Only Oklahoma residents are included in the datasets. Queries may be conducted on all counties or selected counties.

SURVIVED
The survived variable tells whether the person died or survived. Queries may be conducted on persons who died, survived, or both combined.

INTENT
Intent is reported as Intentional, Unintentional, or Unknown. Intentional injuries include those that were purposely inflicted, with the intent to injure or kill someone (including self). Queries may be conducted on persons injured intentionally, unintentionally, or all injuries combined.

YEAR
The year variable tells the year the person suffered the injury. Information may be queried on individual years or on a combination of years. Data on spinal cord injuries, burns, and submersions is available for 1988-2001. Data on traumatic brain injuries is available for 1992-2001

CAUSE/LOCATION
Specific causes of injuries (e.g., motor vehicle crashes, gunshot wounds) are reported for traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. For burns, the cause of the burn (e.g., chemical, scald) is reported. The location of injury (e.g., bathtub, lake) is reported for submersions. Since less than two-thirds of hospitalized cases had an external cause coded for most years, narrative descriptions of injuries were used to assign causes and locations.
